hi guys, have fitted the replacement c30se engine into my carly but there is a red 'F' lit up next to the speedo, now it doesnt come on straight away but its about 5 seconds after you start the car, she seems to feel a bit grogy until this comes on and then its fine. also - this may be connected , rather than the batter light coming on when you turn on the ignition, its the brake fluid low light instead - we did not change the loom as the auto loom from the senny was different where it went to the auto gearbox ecu but i did use the stander engine ecu from the senator as some how we managed to blow the carlton ecu up when wiring the car backl together ??!!!???   have checked relays, wiring plugs and fuses etc. only thing different on the engine is the oil pressure switch as senator did not have digi dash like the carly and there is a spare wire for the pressure reading as the switch on the carly engine was broken.

any ideas about this ere F light Huh?

A quick look in the Carlton handbook says ' Fault Disply ''F''. Displays affected by a fault are switched off. An ''F'' appears in the oil pressure gauge. Have the cause of the fault determined and eliminated by a Vauxhall dealer'.

Hope this helps in someway.  Undecided

Im sure theres a way to get the trip computer to tell you the fault code that has brought the dash F light on, Ive done it once but cant for the life of me think where I got the info.

Ill have a look

Very briefly. like getting the engine blink codes out using the paperclip but not connecting to pin B.
Connect pins A and D instead and the computer screen should come up with any fault code relating to the digital dash and the board computer, mine did anyway when the F light was on.

Im sure I came by this info on ABS, given time to search lots of info is available there.

As for the problem, Ive never done the swap you have but if your dash is from an auto and the box is manual wont it be showing a fault because it wants to know what gear the auto box is in, Im guessing you have an auto dash.(just guessing, I dont really know)

thanks for all that i will try to do it after work today, its the original dash ( manule) but only the engine and ecu have come from the auto senny - im still using my manule gearbox.

many thanks mate :-)

The information that I have is : -

Connect A & D together to flash out the digi dash fault codes, the codes are seen as numbers on the speedometer display.

Edit : (again) I've just remembered that the diagnostic socket doesn't have any pin number markings so to make it easy : -

The Carlton plug is as follows : - with the locking catch on the right, the left hand row begins with A at the bottom and runs A,B,C,D,E up to the top.
The right hand row runs from the top down beginning with F, and runs F,G,H,J,K ( there is no I )
E, J and K have no connector

Connecting these two will also bring up any fault codes pertinent to the on board computer (these will be displayed on the computer display)

12   start of diagnosis
14   Temp. gauge shorted to ground
15   Temp. gauge short circuit to 12 Volts
31   Tacho sender failure
51   Eprom error
55   Internal fault in LCD instrument
155 Diagnostic line low volts
158 Oil pressure sensor short to ground
159 Oil pressure sensor short to 12 volts
161 Auto transmission error
162 Mileage tamper error
167 Fuel gauge sensor short to ground
168 Fuel gauge sensor short to 12 volts

On board computer typical fault codes : -

12   Start of diagnosis
51   Program memory defective
52   program memory not programmed
55   Board computer defective
157 Fuel gauge tank contents    (signal or circuit voltage resistance low)
158 Fuel gauge tank contents    (Signal or circuit voltage resistance high)
169 Outside temperature sensor (resistance too high)
171 Outside temperature sensor (resistance too low)
173 Short circuit to ground in signal lead (Injector signal too long, greater than 400 milliseconds)

These codes are a start point for the investigation, not always an actual fault.
Voltage high very often an open circuit.
Voltage low is very often a wiring short circuit.
Both of the above voltage faults apply to the sensor/actuator as well as the wiring.

It may also be worth considering the information below and deciding how it may be affected by your ECU swaps Undecided

ECU coding wires (where fitted)
Some vehicles equipped with Motronic 1.5 has ECU pins 20 and 21 allocated as coding earths. The open circuit voltage at these pins is at the 5.0 volt reference level.

Connection of the pin to earth indicates to the ECU that the vehicle is equipped with certain equipment.

The non cat vehicle will have pin 20 connected to earth and the catalyst equipped vehicle will have pin
20 open circuit.

The vehicle with AT will have pin 21 connected to earth and the vehicle with MT will have pin 21 open circuit

Oh, I see, I misunderstood about the gearbox.

Melinx, very useful info, although mine definitely displayed the info on the trip computer, I think it can be either from what I read. Maybe depends on year or something.

The way I read it is that the codes that appear on the trip computer relate purely to faults pertaining to the trip computer.

They are a different set of codes which I didn't put in the post because I didn't believe them to be relevant.
