Hi all! My name is Egil and I'm from Norway. I've just bought myself my very first car, a 1993 Opel Omega (carlton) 3.0 24V. I don't think there's anymore to say yet, feel free to ask any question you like, and I'll answer my best Wink

Oh, doesn't sound that fun :/ The guy I bought it from have had the car since 1996 and had no plans of selling it. Luckily I made him change his mind, so here it is! I bet many would over-bid me if they knew he would sell it...

Sounds good Smiley

@Land-Barge, the reason for choosing that as a first car is that I happened to find this one near to where I live, and I've always had an eye for this car type. The car is insured on my mother, that means it costs a lot less to insure. It's insured for both her, and people under the age 24 to use (me),  so we saved alot of money doing it this way.

Well, it's strange because this car is so rare over here, the insurance companies have little experience with them, so therefore, they don't get so expensive, infact, they  cost no more than a Vectra (Cavalier) to insure.

The system in Norway is based more on the car brand, this means that the cars most youths over here drives, Audi, Merc and BMW gets incredibly expensive to insure no matter what engine you choose.

Haha, You're very welcome Smiley

Though the insurance isn't as expensive over here as yours, the cars here are much, much more expensive. A new BMW M3 costs 130 000 pounds here, and a used 2008 Opel Corsa 1,4 costs about the same as a brand new Corsa VXR in Britain. Cars are expensive...

I assume that there must be barriers to the importation from a cheaper source ?

Yes there is, unfortunately. If you import a car from, let's say Germany, you have to pay the price for the car in Germany (obviously) then you have to pay all the taxes to be able to drive it legally on the street in Norway. If the car is very expensive to buy in Norway, like 90 000 pounds or more, you might get 5-10 000 pounds off, but not more. If a car is more reasonable, like 20-30 000 pounds, you wan't save more than 1-2000 pounds usually. Many wan't do this because the savings in money don't make up for all the work.

The main problem over here is the tax system as you can see. If you buy a new car over here witth, let's say about 200 hp and that weighs 1700 kgs +, you end up paying double of what the car originally costs in taxes alone.

I thought that might be so Sad as here, the tax authorities have introduced complex systems to ensure that you pay their wages Angry

Off the subject (slightly) is it true your road taxes are high as it pays to help keep the roads maintained due to the conditions (ice, snow etc...) pay for gritters, snow ploughs? Whereas over here in Britain the country comes to a standstill when there's a couple of inches of snow as we're simply not prepared/don't have the money for it!!

It is worth remembering that here in Britain, the taxation of road users provides about £40 BILLION revenue annually for the government and the spending on roads is £7 BILLION.

To add insult to injury, they then said that the government could not afford the £485 million to build the M6 toll road and empowered a private company to dispossess people of their homes and property to build and profit from it Angry
