Strewth!
If it's an analog dash, it may be significant that it also feeds the voltage regulator for the engine temperature and fuel gauge.
It's possible that if that is blown short circuit, it's the cause of the problem

I've always been amazed that they last as long as they have

their specification is barely adequate!
