Right.... I know literally NOTHING about carlton auto's.... because.... well.... its not my sort of thing.

However, a friend of mine is looking for one for a project of his (long story), and we need to know a few things.

I know later Autoboxes had an ECU..... is this a standalone thing or does it need to talk to the engine ECU? (engine its being mated to doesn't have an ECU)

Did earlier autoboxes have an ECU? (prefacelift? 1.8 Carb? Could you get an auto on 1.8 carbs?!)

Also, does anyone have one they want to get rid of? Cheesy

Thinking about it, thats mainly ECU talk.... maybe I should put this in sparky bits........  Undecided

Pre face lift still has to have an ecu (I had one and removed it from my H reg)
pretty sure all auto boxs will need some wiring (engine speed, start inhibitor, kick down) but i'm sure someone more knowledgeable in the ways of the "mind of it's own gear box" will point you in the right dirrection. Tongue

I wonder what the ECU talks to on the engine? Wiring for kickdown and that isnt a problem Smiley

Anyone know the list of inputs for the auto box?

Id move this to Electrical.... but I appear to have lost all my moderating capability?!

Ok, found the wiring diagram for the autobox ECU. Think Ive tracked down everything I need (although its even got a pin to tell it when the AC is on?!)

Got one last problem. 3 pins connect with the Motronic 1.5 on the 2.0 ecu.

Pins 6, 51, 34

Thought Id lucked out when I found this very useful PDF....
http://www.autoelektrik.ee/data/Bosch_55_pin_Motronic_1.5/VauxhallCarlton.pdf

but for those pins its just states "A/T Control" with no outputs listed  Sad

Anyone have any clue?

more research, looks like 6 is RPM signal, 51 is an idle switch, 34 engine load signal, whatever that means lol

The autobox keeps the engine speed constant when under load - like when you're sat at lights on a hill.

The information I have says that 6 is the engine RPM signal :  34 engine load signal (1.8 to 2.5 millisecond pulses the duration varied by the position of the throttle valve potentiometer:  51 torque control (transmission engaged signal) signal to retard ignition and thus reduce engine torque during gear change thus giving a smooth sequence.

thanks guys, thats some excellent info Smiley

Its looking do-able to wire this up at the moment. Unless anyone knows any 4speed boxes that bolt to GM Family 2 engines (8vs and whatnot) which dont have an ECU. Manta boxes are 3 speed sadly!

What about an AW 03-71 L used on 1986-1990 2L carlton's. That doesn't have an ECU. The engine ECU was the Bosch Motronic ML4 System.

Prone to burning out the 4th gear lockup clutch Roll Eyes VAUXHALL reconned that they would do about 100,000 miles then either rebuild/replace Cry I got through 3 when I was cabbing a 2.0 GLI finaly had to get rid of after doing over 263,000 miles Cry. Company policy on age (5 years max)

Hope this helps Grin

Hi guys, sorry its taken so long. to get back to you Smiley

Nightmare.... didnt know the prefacelifts were non-ecu! Although the longevity sounds a bit rubbish! But none ECU would be very very helpful. hmmmm

tbird.... Needs to be 2.0 stuff really but thanks anyways Smiley
