Hi all,

I own a mk1 cavalier, however... it has some 12v goodness under the bonnet hence my desire to learn more about opel/vaux 6pots in general and this looks like a good forum! - As I've spent a little too much time on retrorides lately, have a picture! Cheesy

Cheers

I wish there was a write up of the project! Smiley - I'm basically at the start of the project... I bought the car and engine for sub £200 as a complete non-runner... sadly it was wrecked and needed a lot of work - the previous owner had let it go to the dogs a bit and the engine was not fitted well at all. However, the reason I bought it is because the chassis and car is completely solid!!

However, it now has tax and test and mechanically is spot on however the engine isn't a very happy bunny (25NE from a senator) however the previous owner hadn't wired it up well at all  Roll Eyes - I am about to embark on megasquirting it, however I am feeling the need for more torque and am considering locating a 3.0L 12v engine to go in instead. - this is also due to the 5spd conversion I am about to carry out and the desire to repaint the engine bay... may as well haul it all out and fit a 3.0L at the same time...

I will try and sort a project thread/blog or something soon! (I'll see if I have any pics in a minute)

Thanks

Jason

Ah so you're the chap with the infamous straight-6 cavalier that did the rounds on ebay for a long while. Glad someone finally picked it up and did something with it as it looked like it had a lot of potential. Smiley More pics and feel free to post a 'project' thread in carlton show-off. Whilst not a carlton its nice to have something different in every now and again Smiley

yeah, I let it do the rounds until it was so cheap that I picked it up for next to nothing Cheesy - in truth I missed it the first time it came up for sale and then picked it up after several months of neglect later for a massively cheaper price! - this is the first time its been on the road for over 5 years. TBH I would never have bought it if it wasn't such a solid example, the MOT tester practically wet himself when he saw how good condition it was in considering how crappy the paint and exterior is! (no advisories on the mot! - obviously I'd done the brakes and wheel bearings etc.)

It was a state though! - full of mould from being stored in an open sided barn on basically a peat bog, the guy I bought it from only wanted bits off it... unluckily for him his main car was crashed into and so he sold this one off as by then it was too much work for him.

I have pretty epic plans for it, just need to decide whether I go the shiny paint look, or keep it shabby and focus on some tasty performance.... hmm

I have a factory fit tow bar for a mk1 cavalier with the correct wiring that just plugs into the standard rear light units.

Are you interested?

Thanks

thanks for the comments guys... currently trying to sort a unit as the next stage gets a bit involved! (think respray, complete engine and drivetrain overhaul rewiring with custom management... getting a bit scary Smiley)

Once I get a unit (hopefully hear back in a few days) then I'll start a proper project blog for it! Cheesy

I really shouldn't want a towbar, but out of interest what is the noseweight it can handle on a mk1 cav?

Are you asking for the down weight on hitch up? This is the same for all cars & is the benchmark for getting towing item on balance & thats 56lbs! Smiley

Thats alot of weight even for cars of today.  Shocked
If you imagine you have a boot full & then a caravan hitched up, this is why you see cars dragging their ar$es on the floor.

Maybe I had been mislead but i can only go on info i had been told by Others dragging vans etc. 46 kilos doesn't sound alot but have you tried picking up 46 bags of sugar? Smiley
If the above is correct, then all those thar do have vans etc on the back of their cars & the A$$ is on the ground with it in permenent wheelie position, i have to wonder what weight is on them? Shocked

loads probably! most people dont even know their vehicles have a maximum noseweight Smiley

best bet for towing is a 4x4... a lot of them have noseweights in excess of 150kgs
