help!!!!
my carlton has developed a small problem. i had my headlights on this evening and i turned my key to the off position and removed it and my engine was still running but the digi dash was blinking and showing 9 gallons of fuel when it is actually only 1!!!
i pulled out sevral fuses and relays and found out that if i remove the reversing light fuse the engine dies and ignition is off however the reverse lights are still on even tho the ignition is off.
but if you turn the side lights off the reverse lights turn off but also noticed that the 2 map lights in the car also come on with sidelights and not ignition, so i replaced the fuse and all worked fine but remove the key and the ignition stays on!!

so i looked at fuse panel and what i can see it says is number 26 which is front head light washers also reverse lights on a 10 amp fuse

if i remove the fuse to disable the ignition so it cant be stolen. the problem is the reverse and map lights come on with side lights!!! so need it sorted please can any one help as its driving me nuts!!

also if the key is removed and fuse back in and side lights on with car running if you attempt to touch horn she will die but ignition stays on lol hhhhhhheeeeeeeeeelllllllllllppppppppppp!!!!!!!!! Huh

Sounds stupid but remove the hazard switch and see if that removes the problem.
If so you'll just need to replace it and you'll be sorted.

Only time I had something like that it was caused by the heated screen melting the fuse board causing a short on the back, quite common on earlier models

to be honest i saw that the fuse for the heated screen has melted also the fuse panel but someone has cut it off and put a seprate fuse behind the fuse panel.

My 91 GSI did exactly that to the screen heater fuse before I got it, I put a couple of wires through to the front of the fuse box and added a fuse.
My first GSI made a burning smell from the same area a couple of times so I never used it again.

I wonder why it would get so hot?

Either a serious short problem, or the only other thing that makes the wrong item work when something is switched on is bad earths, we have all seen brake lights come on with indicators etc.
Have you disturbed any earths?

cheers guys, removed hazzard switch and it did nothing, so i went around removing sensors, relays, fuses etc all whilst the car had the ignition via the headlights - key were in my hands .

i did everything, unplugged the lot lol and eventually i found it ! ! ! ! ! ! !

passenger side under the bonnet near to the scuttle there are 3 relays and the button thingy for some alarm or something, removed a black , four pin relay and it solved the probs. everything seems ok but im not sure what the relay is for but im going to replace it so whatever it is wired upto will still work.

also noticed on the fuse panel - yes im going to replace it soon but for the moment im still keeping it wired up, , ,   here goes :

reading the diagram on the fuse box lid under the steering wheel, it shows that the stereo fuse it in the middle bank and thant on the bottom right there are a few blank gaps  ( no fuses ) however i had to replace a 30amp fuse on the lower right and this works the stereo - lid does not state that there is a fuse here and i am wondering if someone may have already changed the fuse box before and put the wrong one in.    any chance of a photo from someones G reg ( or near )  carlton 24v gsi with manule gearbox so i can confirm that mine is ok??? or am i worrying about nothing. lol

many thanks though peeps :-)

What is in the fuse box is often different (although similar) to what the fusebox lid says and different to what is written in the Haynes manual.
I know this from experience although cant remember the details.
