I'm here to show you another path (The Unit)

« on: July 12, 2010, 10:22:41 AM »

I have probably asked this question before but at my age things start to get a little fuzzy around the edges and what you thought was a question asked often turns out ot be a question you meant to ask.
So, here is the question:

What would be the effect of changing the ECU in a GLi for one from a Diplomat (Both 2ltrs I hasten to add)?

Are the engines mapped differently?

Mines an NE and I was wondering if the mapping for a 2ltr dippy is different to a bog standard GLi.

just curious as to whether it would alter performance or just bugger things up beyond repair - FUBAR in other words.

I dont think there would be much of a difference but it will certainly do no harm to try it mate.

I'm guessing that the GLi has the 20SE engine which has a compression ratio of 10 to 1 compared with the NE which is 9.2 to 1, so the engine mapping will certainly be slightly different.

Probably the worst problem would be that the ignition mapping is slightly retarded for the SE engine map, so you may end up losing a bit of power and get slightly decreased mpg if you put a GLi ECU on an NE engine Sad

I'm assuming that both ECU's are of post '90 vintage ?

i have a GLi 92, and they all have cats and are a NE = C20NE, not sure about the mapping, but like Murph said, ''no harm in trying'' Is the ECU in the GLi buggered then? if the ECU in Dippy was going to make any improvement if it did work, i reackon it would make such little difference you wouldnt even notice, i drove Murphs Dippy de-cated SE compared to my C20NE, and there wernt alot difference at all, his was a little punchyer due to it being de-cated, so instead of a ECU change, may i suggest de-cating it if it still has one? thats my next move along with an manifold upgrade Wink

Mine still has it's NE ECU tho - maybe I should try an SE one too.
I think I would need to change the engine loom to do it but thats no real bother.
