Been fiddling around with Mick's GSI today, I think the dizzy is kaput but want to be 100% sure. The symptons are as follows.

13V at coil across green and black wire (black being positive), 0v across the other black wire, which i presume is the trigger, which comes from the dizzy.
The coil came off the monza which was running, and the iginiton amplifier also looks new.

So next i had a look at the dizzy, the plate which sits under the arm was loose and spinning free from the shaft, which would obviously stop the car from sparking and /or create sporadic a spark. Looks like someone has had it to bits and lost the location pin that makes it spin with the shaft, so i found a blunt drill bit and wedged that in there. Whilst there i noticed the one of the wires, (the positive) had been repaired, albeit correctly. Im getting 6volts going to the dizzy which im sure is correct.

Question how do I test the dizzy? I have no spare, the monza one is different, the connector is different.

Theres no evidence of an alarm or imobilisor.

The coil is a good un, the amplifier looks new, my thinking is that dizzy is shagged

matts done hes magic , its running , thanks matt !!
here how

cars running now

the reason

Well it's all fixed now, number of reasons why it wouldn't run.

The lack of spark was down to a blown resistor in the electronic control unit in the bulkhead, as soon as i'd swapped it for the working monza one i got a decent spark! Looks as thought the wire in the dizzy had broke and shorted back to the control box blowing the resistor. Same thing happened to the monza a few years ago!

The car still wouldn't start after that as the cap was arcing like mad, so replaced that. Still wouldn't start, then we checked the timing and the dizzy was 180 degrees out and had been since we got the car, even then it wouldn't start so i changed the plugs which were the worng type, looked as though were for a 24v or v6. After that it started on the button and runs well.

Shame the brakes are non existent, pedal went straight to the floor at the end of the road!

bit disappointed as alex never mentioned the brakes , but hay hoo onwards and upwards

wip thread asap !

tbh
this gsi would have been a nice car a few years ago , as it not killed on miles or owners
but it needs arches and the sill repairs is by the chuckle brothers as they resorted to screwing the sill covers back in postion , some numpties about !

I'm not jealous, much!!

Everyone needs a 12v GSi to smoke around in.  I still remember mine, bought for £100 as a track day stand in for my Monza, had 6 months test left on it too!  Ok, so it was as rotten as a pear but in the 6 months i had it it never failed me.  Ok so i blew the diff after 4 days (donutting in the works car park), and blew the head gasket too, but on both occasions the car still drove and got me home!!

I want another one!!
