IF ALL ELSE FAILS - HIT IT!!

« on: December 07, 2005, 08:01:12 PM »

Hi all, I'm new to the group!

I've got a bit of a problem, with my GSi, the engine warning light is not working at all.. It has a new bulb in the LCD dash, the dash connections are ok.. any ideas..

Also when the car is hot or cold it takes some time to start, once running it's ok
the fuel pump relay is fine, has new plugs, filters, dizzy, and rotor Huh

any help will be greatly appreciated  Smiley

There could well be a story behind why the light is not working - More info needed!!

Has the light ever worked? Or, have you just got the car? Or, has the dash been 'played' with or swapped??

These Vauxhalls are VERY good starters in all weathers, so something's not right - if the EM light was working, you could flash out any fault codes that might be stored.

I agree with you on them being good starters, this is my 3rd GSI and the worst !!
I've had the car for 4 months now, the EM light has never worked.. the dash doesn't appear to have been played with, but I do have a spare one..  is it worth trying that one in ??

When I bought the car it came with a spare fuel pump relay, injectors and pressure regulator so I think it's had this problem for some time..

The timing is set up OK, valve timing OK.. good compression too..  160psi on each cyl.
throttle swith is set OK   temp sensor appears to be ok aswell....

Could it be the ECU ??

Chances are its going to be more electrical than the ecu.

First of all i would check your connections behind your dash with a multimeter. By eye everything may seem ok but a test meter may show an open circuit.

I've found the problem with the em light... it's not connected to anything !   Smiley

I've traced the wire back to under the bonnet, there is a round 3 pin connector next to the cruise control. I don't know if there is something missing or if it should be like this.. Angry
any ideas anyone  ?

GSi 12V's are normally fitted with the early management system - the engine light isn't used and there is no way of fault coding them using the engine light on the dash

I think even they will give very limited information on an early 12V GSi

I've got VERY limited knowledge of injection systems, but is there a fuel pressure regulator fitted to these systems?
Could this be playing up, causing the difficult starting?
Is the air/fuel mix ok?
Injectors clean and functioning correctly?
Is the fuel pump itself ok?
This probably isn't related, but I drive a BMW 520i, this used to turn over a few times before it fired up, then I read a post on another forum about the new Tesco 99 RON super unleaded. I've started using this now and the beemer fires up immediately.
Before I get a kicking for talking about beemers on here, I have a Senator in my front garden and another Vauxhall addition will be joining the family straight after Christmas.

Hi A3LTR welcome.to the forum...I know this is several days after the last post but you may not have got it sorted yet....
I've just been down the same road with starting problems on me 12v...It would try to fire but after a couple of turns it was dead..& would take 10 to 20 minutes to start...But once it was started it was ok for the rest of the day till the following day...If this sounds familiar we will prob have the same prob..I tried most of the things you have like the fuel system, coil, sensors etc...

It turned out to be a knackered air flow meter....Apparently they're twats for playing up easpecially if the car has been stood for any length of time. The management relies mostly on the air flow meter for the fueling so it knows how much air is going into the engine to calculate the right amount of fuel to inject...My meter had got stiff & just the cranking of the engine was barley enough to move the flap so when it was cold it couldnt get that extra bit of fuel to start on choke..I stuck a another air flow meter on & it's started first time every time since.. Grin Grin
Took me 2 weeks to suss the bitch out!!lol!!!
If thats what yours is doing then theres a pretty  good chance thats what it is mate!!

I think you could be right with the air meter, ever since I fitted a K&N 57i kit it seems to have got a bit worse... only thing is, tracking down a decen air meter.. mine has the motronic system. I do have a spare meter from my bedford van.. i'll see if that fits cos that appears to have the motronic system too !

cheers for ya help   Smiley

Don't do that please - the spring tension is factory set - fitting a meter calibrated to a smaller engine car could be disasterous - a second hand one from another "identical" spec car would be much better....
