3 litre armchair special

« on: June 18, 2009, 05:23:41 PM »

Hi all, i bought a set of magnecor leads for the barge a while back, got them out today and found they have the old 'conventional' type fittings as opposed to the later type pin fittings that mine has Embarrassed

called up magnecor and apparentley there are two types of distributor cap for the 12v depending on age?  If that is the case what year did the dizzy caps change and is it just the fittings that are different? ie can i fit the old type in place of the one i have?

Im looking to buy a new dizzy cap and rotor arm as part of an upcoming service anyway so would rather try this than send the leads back Huh

Not sure about the change over date but you can use either type.
I had the same problem on my Senny.
Bought new leads off Pedro, they did not fit so bought right dissy cap and job done.

The correct cap for the leads or vice versa is correct in my opinion Wink

The non pin type leads in a pin type cap will probably work, but only because the spark is arcing over the gap; not a good situation Sad

The other thing to ensure is, are they the resistive type as per original spec.

Copper core cables run the risk of producing sufficient interference to cause obscure malfunctions in the ECU Sad

I've got Magnecor leads on my 12v Senator and they made a noticeable difference. Before I fitted them I'd also bought a replacement dizzy cap which just happened to have the pins in the turrets. The old one was the other type. The new, pinned one fitted and performed perfectly. Apart from the pin, I think the turrets are slightly thicker than previously.

Well my local motor factors werent much help, they only stock the pin type and say thats the only one you can get Sad

Anyway ive looked online and found there is two types Smiley but they dont say which is which, just one for chassis numbers up to K1999999 and the other from chassis number L1000001.  I assume the 'K 'chassis is the earlier type and so the dizzy cap should have the conventional fittings?

Yep i think thats helped, just checked the bosch part numbers with the site i was looking at

http://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk

And the numbers match the dizzy cap they have for the 'L' chassis numbers, so i guess the other one is the early type Smiley

The pin type cap was used on the gold top 12v's. Alot of motor factor don't list the 2 different types. When I needed some new leads for the others halfs gold top most kept ordering the older style type and when I went to collect them and pointed out that they were the wrong type I was told that they are the only leads available for the 12v's.

Thought i'd update this since it may help others, was looking through the intermotor catalogue at a friends garage today and although they only list one type for the Carlton, for the Senator they list two types Smiley

Armed with this new information i went down the motorfactors and compared the two types.

For the old type fitting the intermotor part number is 44010

For the later pin type fitting the part number is 44021

There is only one rotor arm lised for both caps and that is 48970s

Anyway i bought 44010 and it fitted perfectly so no problems and i can now fit my leads, just gotta wait til i get a new rotor arm as they didnt have this in stock Roll Eyes
